Woodcut Print, first appeared in the 8th century in the East and in the early 15th century in the West, and is the earliest known method of relief-printing. Using this traditional technique, the design is first painted onto the wood block. Then the surface of the wood is cut away, leaving a raised surface, that will be inked. A sheet of paper is then laid over the wood block and run through a press. The whole process must be kept pristinely clean to produce a good print.
